The Lyrics That Defined 2018

2018 was full of amazing musical releases, as well as releases that did not make a mark. However, the one thing we are sure about when it comes to last year is that we have seen some amazing musical releases, and more importantly, some lyrics that more or less defined the entire year.

In this article, we look back at the lyrics that defined 2018.

“Thank you, Kanye, very cool”

One of the strangest thing that happened back in 2018 was the rather strange friendship between Kanye West and President Donald Trump. The 1975 decided to make this entire situation a lot cooler by including president’s tweet that said, “Thank you, Kanye, very cool” and including it in their song called Love It If We Made It.

“You are hiding a child/Let that boy come home”

Pusha-T is not someone who is known for holding back, so when he released the song called The Story of Adidon, he was not shy when the line “You are hiding a child/Let that boy come home”. For those who do not know, Pusha-T was targeting Drake, and we are not sure about the whole situation but we are sure that these lyrics carried a lot of weight.

“Men are scum, I won’t deny”

Last year was a year when men were being called out for their questionable, and downright horrible behavior. So much so that even the men themselves turned against the ones who were being anything but decent human beings. The release of a song called Middle American by Stephen Malkmus was a strong one, but what was stronger was the lyrics that said, “Men are scum, I won’t deny”. It definitely sent a message.

“One taught me, love, one taught me patience, and one taught me pain”

Say what you will about Ariana Grande, but you cannot overlook the fact that she is trying to bring a positive change into the world. Despite going through an awful lot, she remained a bright spot for the entire year. Her “Thank U, Next” song had a lot of meaningful lyrics, but the one that held the most meaning was “One taught me, love, one taught me patience, and one taught me pain”.

“You’re classic in the wrong way”

Kacey Musgraves has already been very amazing with her way of expressing things. Her single “High Horse” was not only good but the lines “You’re classic in the wrong way” had a lot of meaning. That is not it, the more you listen to the song, the more you realize just how amazing the music was.

“I picked a good day for a recreational Percocet”

Pistol Annies is a band that we think everyone should be listening to, and for all the right reasons. The band has some amazing music and are consistent with their music as well. Something we do not get to see a lot. Best Years of my Life had a line that said, “I picked a good day for a recreational Percocet” and it happens to be a lyrical masterpiece.
